The Air Quality Index (AQI) is a generic indicator of air quality and its effects on health in a given location. It indicates the level of pollution in a location, its potential health effects, and the recommendations that should be followed to protect it.

At Eltiempo.es we use both the European Union methodology and that of the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) with modelled data on air quality. The European Union data comes from the European Union Copernicus Atmospheric Monitoring Service (CAMS). Applying both methodologies, we calculate an air quality index for each pollutant, which depends on its concentration. From the indices calculated for each pollutant, we select the one with the most unfavourable value. This value is the one considered as the air quality index for the day
